I owned the Money Movement Product Area and launched Send to Non-Chipper, which achieved millions in TPV in just 4months. I collaborated with Product, LRC and Engineering to expand this feature into 10+ countries.
The Problem
Problem Category / Discovery, Efficiency, Globalization
In addressing a critical challenge within the digital finance landscape, we sought to empower Chipper users with the ability to send funds directly to non-Chipper recipients. Recognizing the reluctance of recipients to undergo onboarding processes, our quest was to establish a more streamlined solution. How might we enable Chipper users to send funds directly to a non-Chipper recipient, without the recipient having to download the app, onboard, verify, & link payment methods.
Design Process Recap
The process of this project, as with most of my other works wasn’t linear, and I go deeper into sharing visuals of the process in the full version of this case study.
The design process involved problem analysis encompassing discovery work, current state audit, and creating a guiding HMW Statement. Moving on to Solution Definition, where the core design work began, including test, and syncs with content design and an LRC review. Further the process moved to Review and Cleanup and Handoff, which led me to collaborating with Engineering on the build, reviewing Git PRs and scaling design for other markets.
The Solution*
We devised a method that allowed users to send funds without requiring recipients to download the app, complete onboarding, or link payment methods. Leveraging interoperability, funds seamlessly reached recipients via existing services such as mobile money wallets, bank accounts, or physical cash.
Design Concepts
Initial Version
This is concept 1 / 3 of the early design exploration we embarked on.
4
Refined Concept
We tried a new idea with refined components, and stress-tested it all. This concept has options for recipient country selection and shows recent recipients, as well. This version has 3 other versions.
Final* Concept
There is often never really a final version, haha. But this concept took us closer to what we intended to achieve with our MVP
All these designs were eventually updated in line with the latest design system. The flows remained the same. Another reason why this solution worked was because it allowed us to build new design components, which were useful to other product areas.
Design & Business Impact
3 New Processes
Due to the nature of the project, I embarked on processes that were new to the team; Content Design + Legal, Risk and Compliance collaboration, and Github PR Reviews. With time, they got conversant and introduced them into their workflow.
Scaled to over 10 Countries
We launched in 1 Country with a 20% availability for Chipper Users and later to 10 more countries (Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, South Africa, Kenya, United Kingdom, USA, Rwanda, etc) with a 100% availability for Chipper users.
Post Launch Stats
Generated millions in Total Processed Volume, and processed thousands of transactions in 4 months after the launch of the new design. Key Learning, Figurative Impacts and Data are omitted from this version of the case study. Proceed with Password
12+ New Components
During and after the design phase, I was able to create and introduce new reusable components to the Chipper Design System. These components were later reused on other product areas like Onboarding, Cards and Marketplace.
